SONG OF THE DAY (Top 15 Songs of 2014) 1. Young the Giant - Mind Over Matter --- It felt a little strange ending this list with a heavy-rotation radio song after all of the indie and instrumental post-rock bands of whom I have been singing the virtues. I was trying to convince myself of La Dispute because of their ever-growing conceptual brilliance, Trophy Scars because they are probably the most underrated group in rock, Mastodon because they release such a brilliant song after so many years of being a favorite band of mine, Cloud Nothings because of how that song and that album just resonated so deeply with me. However, this is a list thats about songs, not bands. And the truth is, there is no song I listened to, no song I craved, more than Mind Over Matter this year. It was the song of the summer to be sure, the soundtrack to many of my warm-weather adventures with friends, and it turns out it was also the song of the year. I was listening to it multiple times a day, twice in a row sometimes, like a 12 year old girl obsessed with a single from their favorite boy band. Very rarely, like, once every 5 years or so, a group release something that can be described as the perfect pop song, and that is what Mind Over Matter is. It hits every note it reaches for masterfully, it is seemingly peaking and re-peaking for its entirely running time - its a song that swings for the fences numerous times and never misses.
