SUNDAY, 23 JUNE 2013: The sky got light around 4:00 am. Newfoundland is on its own town, 30 minutes later than Atlantic Time, 1-1/2 hour later than Cleveland. The ferry was comfortable but sleeping in a seat was not the best. We landed at Port-aux-Basques, a picturesque little town with simple buildings but nice scenery. After we left Port-aux-Basque, we got on the last part of the Trans-Canada Highway and began the drive across Newfoundland Island (it’s 600 miles to St. John’s). The scenery is beautiful. We passed lots on inlets, lakes etc. We made it to Placentia on the west coast of the Avalon Peninsula. We had a really night B&B reserved so we gave up another night of camping. Placentia is on a complex set of bays and inlets. Nearby was Argentia Naval Base where FDR and Churchill met during World War II. The base is dismantled except for weird bunkers (Dick Cheney’s undisclosed location???). We tried to eat in a nice restaurant (my dad even changed his shirt) but they wouldn’t let us in because I’m a minor and it was past 8:00 pm and their liquor license didn’t allow it. So we had a choice of Chinese (yuk) or Harold’s Restaurant – the Chinese might have been better after all.
