Sand Whiting The humble sand whiting is one of the tastiest bread - TopicsExpress

Sand Whiting The humble sand whiting is one of the tastiest bread and butter fish to catch (IMO), And can be caught almost anywhere along the coast line. They are regular visitors to the surf environment feeding on the stired up pipis and baits caused by the waves and whitewash. They will inhabit beaches with large swell but more often then not they prefer abit calmer, more gentle waves and a gentle decline to deeper waters out further. A lot of people will head straight to popular beaches but have a try at more secluded bays and semi protected beaches which are a prime habitat for the delicious species. A tip would be stay clear from deep gutters as the larger predatory fish will be scouting the area for a feed and the whiting know this so head a bit further along the beach to counter this factor. You still may catch a few there but not in any large numbers. They will be more likely around shallower edges of sand banks where they scout for a feed for them-self with less risk of being dinner for something else. If you are not having too much luck at one location, take a walk further down and try a few different spots to see if you can locate where they are feeding. A lot of the time you could easily cast OVER where the fish are hiding as they can be as close to the shore where the wave breaks onto the beach feeding. For tackle fish as light as possible to feel the strikes better. Plus its more fun having to put up a fight to win your lunch! A little ball or bean sinker and a long shanked hook with a beed is all you need. Nothing fancy. Beach worms, pipis, prawn are the standout baits to land a feed but there are also a few other options to try. For lures try bibbed hard bodies to drag along the sea floor flicking up a little sand as it goes. Unless your in calm sheltered water, poppers prob arent the best option but do work. They are quite active when feeding so keep an eye out for disturbance in the water too whilst flicking your rod. All in all it makes a good day out on a nice hot sunny day and bringing home some lunch/dinner can make it all the more rewarding. Hope this helps you out for next time! CHEERS.
