Saturday October 18, 2014 Three faces, and something to think about. We have a new digital watch in the family. It comes with three ‘faces,’ (you can order more.) One is the ‘old analog face.’ It’s interesting because as I looked at it this morning while making the bed and cleaning the house, it occurred to me that this ‘face’ shows past and future, with ‘hands’ on the present. Knowing and profiting from our past makes a great difference, “History is bound to repeat itself,” we often hear. But if that history is bad or destructive, let’s hope and pray that we don’t repeat it again. Some history is hard to break, and slow to let go, but it is past—it is history. I’m grateful for the analog face. The second face is a digital read out with the month, the date and the time in crisp clear numbers. This is a distinct reminder of what the ’hands on’ analog face points out, namely, the importance of the present. I listened to a psychologist give a little talk once and the gist of his presentation was this: “Too many of us are not present in the moment at all. We’re distracted by activity, on the phone, sending a text, writing a thank you note while watching our favorite TV show. Others talk to us, and we seem to be listening, but in fact, we are ‘some place else. You can only enjoy the present—the moment—if you willfully and purposely live into your valuable present.” This is given-- time to emphasize the present, and live it to the full so that our past will then be good to remember, and our future open. It does say, “I’ve come to give you life and life more abundantly.” (John 10:10). Dive into your present! The third face reads out the time in words, for example: ten forty five. The power of words continues to shape the world. The sacred Word calls us to God, to our best selves; to living the way God feels is best. “There is great power in words,” Charles Rand Kennedy once wrote, “all the things that get done in the world are done by words.” Mr. Kennedy wrote that a long time ago, but there is no way to reduce the influence and power of words to tear down, to build up, curse and discourage or to bless and encourage. When I’m on ‘word’ face of the new watch, I’ll do all I can to ‘watch’ my words, and use the best ones possible. Lord knows what technology will bring us next. Whether it will bless and free us, or work against our best interests. Like anything else, we need to baptize it with interpretation and then apply it in the best ways possible. Imagine all this, just because this new watch came home, a watch with three faces. Each face, however, does have its lesson for consideration. At least to me. Always love always, Keith
