Schools Chancellor Carmen Fariña has mixed results during her first year Debbie Egan-Chin/New York Daily News Schools Chancellor Carmen Fariña visits New Bridges Elementary in Crown Heights, Brooklyn, on Monday to check on the school’s progress. City schools boss Carmen Fariña strode purposefully into New Bridges Elementary school in Crown Heights Monday morning, visiting a new school in a struggling district. Then the 50-year city educator sat down with principal Kevyn Bowles in a small conference room and asked some tough questions about the school’s staff. “In terms of ineffective teachers, do you have any?” said Fariña, who worked as a teacher, principal and district superintendent before taking the city’s top education job. Some new instructors needed help with their classes, Bowles said, even though they were working hard. Fariña told Bowles to give them a little more time. “I’d say by the beginning of March, you’ll know,” Fariña said. “Anyone who says they’re a good teacher their first year is lying.” Popular is okay, respected is better. Then Fariña gave Bowles some tips for attracting students to his school. “For recruiting purposes, you should be using the faith-based organizations,” said Fariña.
