Science update (04.07.2013.) The fate of Earth Sudipta Paul Earth formed around 4.54 billion (4.54×109) years ago by accretion from the solar nebula. Much of the Earth was molten because of extreme volcanism and frequent collisions with other bodies. One very large collision is thought to have been responsible for tilting the Earth at an angle and forming the Moon. The Earth could be habitable for another 2.3 billion years, extending previous estimates of life’s horizon by more than a billion years. Over the next hundreds of millions of years, the sun will continue to get brighter until, eventually, Earth becomes too hot to inhabit. Previous calculations had pegged that time at about a billion years from now, but the new paper argues that earlier models had neglected the role of atmospheric pressure in regulating the temperature of the planet on astronomical timescales.
