Senator Carl Levin Jun 7 (1 day ago) Dear Mr. Laviolette: Thank you for contacting me about the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and funding for science programs. I appreciate hearing your views on this matter. It was little more than hundred years ago that Wilbur and Orville Wright left the ground for the first flight in a winged plane. Since that famed, first flight, technology has progressed steadily and exponentially. With such progress and success, many have come to view spaceflight as routine. I have advocated for increases in funding for federal science and research programs over the years because I believe it is essential to support our nation’s fundamental scientific base. I have been a strong proponent of the America COMPETES Act, which was passed in the 110th Congress, and among other things, established an Innovation Acceleration Research Program to promote innovation and competitiveness activities. This legislation also established grants for specialty schools for mathematics and science studies. Over the last several years, I have joined many of my Senate colleagues in urging the Senate Committee on Appropriations to support increases in federal science and research programs, and I will continue to fight strenuously for funding for science to ensure that the goals of the America COMPETES Act are met. Federal investment in basic scientific research pays considerable dividends, helping America compete in an increasingly globalized economy while keeping good jobs right here in the United States. Over the last century, Americans have been at the cutting edge of important scientific and technological innovations, and we have much to gain from future research. I will continue to work to secure adequate funding for science and research to help strengthen our economy and to support our educational institutions and industries. I will certainly keep your views in mind as the fiscal year 2014 budget process moves forward. Thank you again for contacting me. Sincerely, Carl Levin levin.senate.gov
