Several years ago I read Shattered Sword: The Untold Story of the Battle of Midway, by Parshall & Tully. One of the keys to their narrative was that a key reason for the defeat of the Japanese at Midway was that they had devised a plan to defeat themselves. That is, knowing how they would react to certain situations they devised a plan to defeat themselves. Which might actually have worked had they been the enemy. One of their problems, though, was that we didnt react the way they would have. So they lost, at least in part, because they were attacking an enemy that didnt actually exist. I suspect we will find the same thing with this movie, since the mindset that the Japanese took into the Battle of Midway is all too common in American evangelicalism. We create elaborate evangelism techniques, or in this case, write movies, that fit our view of the the universe, and then wonder why were ineffective and/or end up looking like idiots? Of course, we have God on our side. Which means when our efforts to evangelize straw-men fail, and our attempts to portray straw-man enemies just make us look foolish, we can always fall back on the classic excuse: Theyre not rejecting us. Theyre rejecting Gaaawwd! Yeah right. :-P
