Sharma defends Cameron The Commonwealth Secretary General, - TopicsExpress

Sharma defends Cameron The Commonwealth Secretary General, Kamalesh Sharma, on Sunday defended British Prime Minister David Cameron, saying that the latter had not abdicated his duties by the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM), which concluded in Colombo that day. Answering a question, during his last press conference at the BMICH, Sharma said it was not correct to accuse PM Cameron of having roamed without even attending CHOGM’s executive sessions. The British Prime Minister was an active participant in the conference, Sharma noted adding that his engagements had been arranged in keeping with the tight schedules of the leaders. Cameron had, he pointed out, been to Jaffna after the Sri Lankan government had extended an open invitation to all Heads of State, to visit any part of the country, including the former war zones, to see for themselves the progress that had been made and check the veracity of the various statements being made against it. The fact that some leaders took the opportunity offered to them, should be seen as a vote of confidence in Sri Lanka and not the other way about, the Secretary General observed. Sharma, when told, at Saturday’s media briefing, that only 28 of the 53 Heads of State were in Colombo for CHOGM, replied that the Retreat at the Waters Edge, was better attended than the one held during the last summit meeting in Perth. Responding to another query, he replied that last week’s incident, when a group of journalists from Britain’s Channel 4, led by Callum Macrae, who were on their way to Jaffna, were prevented from proceeding beyond Anuradhapura by a group of about 400 protestors, could not be described as a mockery of democracy. island.lk/index.php?page_cat=article-details&page=article-details&code_title=92349
