Shaykh al-islam al-hajj ibrahim ibni al-hajj abdullah niass at-tijjani al-kaolakhi-1900-1975 ad - was a major leader of the tijjaniyya sufi order of islam in west africa and the most renowned islamic scholar in the twentieth century his followers numbered in the millions and comprised the largest single muslim movement in west africa -hiskett 1984- his followers in the senegambia region affectionately refer to him in wolof as baye or father he is the founder of the ibrahimiyyah branch of the tijjani order whose adherents numbering millions are spread across the globe shaykh ibrahim abdullah niass was born in rural senegal the son of alhajj abdullah muhammad niass -1840-1922- born in 1900 -in the village of tayba niassene between the senegalese city of kaolack and the of gambia his father was the main representative personality of the order in the saalum region at the beginning of the twentieth century during his youth he moved with his father to the city of kaolack where they established the zawiyya -religious center- of lewna niasses his father al-hajj abdullah represented the culmination of a long line of islamic scholars in the senegambia region and was himself a well-traveled and consummate shaykh attracting students from all around the region as far away as mauritania shaykh ibrahim inyass was educated primarily at the hands of his father with full access to his father extensive library shaykh mastered at an early age from his father the full range of islamic sciences the quran and its interpretation the hadith and their explanation jurisprudence sufism and other branches of knowledge
