(Sheryl here) Its another fun-filled Question and Answer Friday! Last week our Captains were busy filming a few more episodes of The Bait, so I wasnt able to get answers. I saved up the questions for this week, though - so here they are! (1) Do you guys crab fish 4 times a year or 3? • F/V Time Bandit fishes for King Crab (October – December) and Opilio Crab (January – March). We fish crab two times per year, and we do tendering throughout the summer and fall months. (2) Im intrigued what do you and the other captains like to do when you’re not crabbing whether its with the family or time to your selves. • We have other business obligations, and we do miss our families and try to spend as much time with them as we can. (3) I have noticed that the boats have a pretty extensive medicine box (Like season 9 with Juniors guy with a knee infection). Does the F/V or Captain need a special license in order to keep that much prescription medication and supplies on board? Also what steps do you take to keep it safe from potential drug abuse by people on board? • You need to have a Captains license, or be the owner/operator of the boat, to have controlled substances in your first aid kit. • The first aid kit is locked to prevent abuse. (4) We were wondering, how much do the king and opie seasons cost the Time Bandit every year on average, including permits, gas, bait, food, repairs before the start, etc.? How much does it cost to run a crab boat per year? • About one million for the year, provided there are not major repairs needed. (5) Since the Bering sea is so cold, much like the waters off the coast of Iceland and Greenland, has ANY Captain or crew, ever found any evidence of Mermaids? Seriously. • Never seen any signs of one. (6) Any updates on how Jake Harris is doing? • No idea, we haven’t seen him for a while, but Josh says he’s doing good. (7) Capt. Johnathan Hillstrand, when the boat is full of King Crab how long on average does it take to unload and does the scale they use 2 measure your load match the estimated weight the boat carries? • It takes 12-14 hours to unload a full two weeks’ worth of captured King Crab. The estimate we have made in pounds is usually fairly close to the final weight the processor has. (8) What is the depth of a fathom? (As in how many feet is a fathom?) • 1 fathom=6 feet (9) How much of the Alaskan Hunter were they able to salvage? • None of the boat was salvageable, but they were able to recover 4500 gallons of the diesel fuel. (10) Does Captain Johnathan own a Harley and if so what kind • Captain Johnathan owns a 2000 Harley Fatboy (140 HP). There is an album of pictures in the photos section of this page. (11) Do you ever get tired of doing meet and greets? Doesnt it take away from a lot of your family time? • It can be overwhelming when we do too many. We have had to turn down some requests, in order to keep it manageable. (12) I have a ticket to see Sig and friends in Sept in Glenside Pa. Hope the Hillstrands will be there too. • Unfortunately, we will not be there, but I’m sure Capt. Sig will have a great show. (13) Whats the difference between a king pot, opilio pot? They all pretty much look the same to me. • They are the same pots; we just re-rig the sizes of the tunnel openings and escape hatches depending upon the crab we are catching. (14) Is this REALLY Johnathan Hillstrand? • This is the REAL Capt. Johnathan Hillstrand’s page (the only one). Capt. Johnathan created this page, and stops by from time to time to check on it. He has me (Sheryl) help him keep up with his Social Media pages, as it can all be a full-time job sometimes. (15) How often is their motion sickness? Do they get Ill every trip? • A couple of the guys (Capt. Johnathan and Eddie Sr., most notably) get seasick at the start of every season – but not every trip. It’s only after they’ve been off the boat for a few weeks that they get seasick again. (17) Do any of the guys plan to visit Southern California this year? • We do not have any appearances planned in California at this time, but keep checking timebandit.tv for any appearances we add. (18) Whats the longest time yall have gone without sleep, and how do yall stay awake so long? • For Capt Andy, it was 81 hours, many years ago when it was open fishing (before the quota system). These days we try to limit it to 20 hour awake, then 4 asleep.
