Shubho Mahalaya: And hence starts the reign of the goddess. The time of the year have done its duty by being the most mild. The sky has done its part by being the dreamiest, bluest blue. The clouds have done their part by flecking the endless sky. The “Shiuli” has done its part by coloring the grass white and the “kash phool” has done its part by blooming just right. Its Mahalaya: the auspicious day that marks the advent of “Durga Puja”; from whence the “devipokksho” starts. The good will take over the evil. The light will take over darkness and the goddess will take over the demons of consciousness. The goddess in every woman will awaken and bask in a new light. Nostalgia and happiness will go hand in hand in every Bengali hearts. From this day on to the Dussehra, no husband can refuse to anything the wife asks for or say. It is the time for the minister of the house; the woman in power. And indeed, it is getting together, it is spending time with loved ones. It is not the ritual but the festivity that Durga Puja is all about. For me ‘Mahalaya’ has a different meaning altogether. On this very day I lost my father when I was 2 and Half years and my brother 19 days old. My mother, a young girl was brave enough not to be dependent on my uncles and resumed study and later took up job. She struggled and brought us up. I don’t remember my father and whatever I am today, it’s because of my Mother. I dedicate my existence to this GREAT LADY….MY BELOVED MOTHER….
