Since 2014 June 1 government college teachers in kerala have been recording their daily attendance through Electronic Punching System. A welcoming act on the part of the government. Anything that is reasonably making people accountable is good and that should be welcomed so long as it doesnt hurt the autonomy and creativity of people. The present punching system is introduced with quiet different motives. All government college and AIDED college teachers are being appointed and paid by the state and both types of teachers are following the rules and regulations framed by the UGC time to time. Here the government applied punching for government college teachers alone. Working time is an integral part of nature of work that is similar to both AIDED college teachers and government college teachers. Working hours of government and AIDED college teachers was 9.30 to 3.30 but when government introduced punching ,they ,without any consultation and against all prevailing rules and regulations regarding working time of college teachers framed by the UGC ,changed working time of government college teachers from 9.30 to 4.30 without changing working hours of AIDED college teachers that is still 9.30 to 3.30. So applying punching to college teachers alone is a clear case of discrimination that is against the constitutional provision of Right to Equality. College teachers are doing a number of extra teaching works ( most of them are clerical works in nature) like PTA,various committees (about 75 committees are functioning in our college) . Besides them teachers have to work with New Initiatives like Scholar support programs. Additional skill acquisition programs.Remedial coaching classes.Entry in to service programs,JRF -NET coaching programs ,tutorials ,discipline committees,NSS and NCC and many mandatory committees like women cell,anti ragging cell,college council ,admission committees.student study tours and many other these kinds of extra works. ( The list is not complete because of fear of space ) Government has altered the working time of government college teachers like a dictator without any consultation with the teachers and purely on whims and fancies of people who constitute authority. If government can behave like that why cant affected people give up their extra works they are engaged with besides their classroom teaching works as a protest against this kind of undemocratic acts that are detrimental to constitutional protections. I personally believe that a victim must have the right at least to cry when he/she faces suppression and oppression. AKGCT and GCTO have started to sign and punch at 3.30 and leaving campus as a protest is a welcomed act.
