Snipers & Canucks take early leads in TWHL playoffs The Chatuchak Canucks and the Sport Corner Snipers won their opening games in the semi-final rounds of TWHL action last Monday night. Chatuchak came back from a 1-0 lead to score five times and trounce the Ramkhamhaeng Red Wings 5-1; ironically Ramkhamheang had beaten Chatuchak 7-3 in the last regular season game the weekend before, but could not carry any momentum over into this particular contest. The two teams were tied in scoring chances with 10 apiece at the end of the second period and the Red Wings Christian Lefebvre had given his team a temporary cushion heading into the third, but Chatuchak came awake with big Bob Bulic moving to forward and scoring two goals to lead the way; Ted O’Neill, captain Geoff McIntyre and Remo Nyffenegger had singles for Chatuchak with Nyffenegger adding a pair of assists as well. The Red Wings had Jason Cotsmire back in net, “Cots” was the first goalie taken in the TWHL draft last September, but he missed the entire second half of the season due to injury. He held his own for the first two periods but the Canucks’ speed and firepower proved too much for him in the third. The Canucks Yves Gaboriault was strong in the Chatuchak net, stopping Paul Stoddart on a breakaway, in a play that many say changed the tide of the game. The Wings were also missing high-scoring centre Zac Garofolo and that hurt as his playmaking ability can keep Chatuchak hemmed in its own end. The evening’s other game was a very even and close-fought affair with Sport Corner finally nudging the Jogsports Ice Jackets 3-2 in a shootout. The teams were tied at 2 after regulation and then went to a 4-on-4 overtime for four minutes before settling the affair with a shootout. Michael White and David Blomquist failed in their shootout attempts for Jogsports while Sammy Wheeler and Vladimir Prochazka each scored to secure the win for Sport Corner. Ironically, both White and Blomquist had scored in regulation for Jogsports while Prochazka tallied both regulation goals for Sport Corner, both set up by Wheeler. So the night really boiled down to the White, Blomquist, Prochazka and Wheeler show. Sport Corner outshot Jogsports 28-27 on the night and both goalies (the Snipers’ Dave Anderson and the Ice Jackets’ Pattarapol “Dream” Angulpattanasuk) had big games between the twines. Game two of the semi-finals are on Monday March 17th with Chatuchak taking on Ramkhamhaeng at 8:30pm and Sport Corner going against Jogsports at 9:30. jogsports
