So, I have a rescued pup - now 7 months - and she had awful beginning and hence she craves attention and acceptance from other dogs. She was allowed off lead from when I could take her out - rescued at 10 weeks, after jabs, allowed out at 20 weeks - but she never had a recall. If she saw another dog she was off, if she saw people she often went off too. I decided to keep her on a 40ft lunge after a mile trek to retrieve her as she followed a family that wouldnt stop for me. If on lunge, she would still run toward people but at the end of the line she would come back. Afew times she would stay with us, 90% of the time she would come back and then run straight back in the direction of the dog shed seen. Even with treats, shed take the treat and still run back to the other dog. I like to let her off lead when I can but Im always searching for other dogs. If I see one she goes on lead. She then writhes about until they pass. Ive been teaching her to sit and stay when she sees a dog that is walking afew feet away not in our direction with minor improvement. I dont let her greet every dog. She does however ignore people mostly, if she is having an off day she will ignore me but mostly she is good with ignoring people when off lead. When she greets a dog in the street, she can be quite rude - jumping up - on occasion but is usually nice and polite. We used to walk in a huge field with tonnes of other dogs which was so helpful for recall around distraction, now its winter we walk on paths. Ive found a fenced court to do some recall undisturbed and with treats she did extremely well. The only problem is that she is not learning how to ignore other dogs because no other dogs are present and there are no other distractions. Should I use this time to build a solid recall and work on the ignoring dogs part in the summer or is there another way I can achieve this? In the summer she will be over a year old. Shes one of three. My middle one has excellent recall and will not approach dogs or humans unless released. I thought about taking them together as this helped in the past as my little one copies everything her sister does but again, there are no distractions. Any hints for winter training would be helpful. Ive never had a pup during winter (and will not again).
