So, I was just trolling a post on Taylor Swifts fan page that came up in my news feed because I am a fan and she just announced her new albums release date. She also released the first single and video for it this week which I am still a bit hesitant about because like most people I can be resistant to change and the sound is a big departure for her but anyway, back on topic! A certain gentleman posted the comment in the thread her voice and music are garbage which was petty and mean but after taking a quick look at his profile page it was clear that not only is he an older man (not the younger folks, like me ;) who tend to love Taylor Swift) but he also seemed to be a musical man, a drummer in particular which lead to wonder where his true motivation was in trashing this young and very talented singer-songwriter. This may be a bit off track but a few hours ago I posted a quote I wrote earlier today that was inspired by this exact type of hate: ALWAYS...honor those who have allowed their talents to shine bright enough to touch others! The inspiration was Taylor, in part, who had me thinking about how someone with such talent and even massive revenues can still garner such hate. I also thought about other well known artists today that also get negative attention and some who may or may not suit my own liking but who bring joy to others. I then went on the track that EVERYONE has some type of talent that shines bright within them and that when people allow themselves to realize that talent and share it with others and touch others with it in positive ways that are lasting we should always honor them. The quote is not about any one person and certainly not about fame but the idea that as a society we should honor when others do positive things rather than dis them for whatever dozens of reasons so many do. So, with that in mind I replied to this kind man as such in regard to his garbage comment: Wow that is quite a statement! While REVENUES should never define how good one is musically or otherwise I grew up listening to what I still consider the greatest music of the recorded music era. I grew up listening to the greats and a very few of them would be; Led Zeppelin, Rush, Joni Mitchell, The Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, The Eagles, Black Sabbath, etc, etc... As I got older my own tastes expanded but I still listen to these artists and MANY OTHERS of the same 1970s Rock and Roll era and the creativity, musicianship and songwriting of this era are unparalleled. Sure there have been other great artists and even decades but in my view. with the possible exception of the Jazz era, there has been no other to match what we now call classic rock. And yet Taylor Swift writes ALL her own music which is not something common in this modern era of overproduced pop music that often puts out songs with 4, 5, even 6 or more individuals credited on a song that sounds totally canned. Taylor stays completely true to her own purity and continues to grow as a person and that is reflected in her songwriting. She is, in my humble opinion, one the best songwriters of the last 70 years in any genre. Her hooks are Beatles-esque, her lyrics highly relatable, her music is often simple yet shows layers that are impressive, she has a very good voice and can even play guitar better than many. Have you ever written a song that you were willing to share with others? Any experience in composition? What I find really odd about your comment and profile is that you have an electronic drum kit as your photo and presumably identity so I might venture to guess you are a drummer. And, yet as one myself who grew up in a musical family with many friends who were musicians I always learned to recognize the difference between crappy music and really good music that simply didnt suit my taste (yes there is a difference and generally musicians get that concept). The idea of calling someones voice and music garbage when in fact from a purely objective place that statement would be false is not the kind of statement a real musician would generally make. But rather someone who is jealous or envious of someone elses talent because they have not been able to really tap into their own inner talent. Either that or they listened to one song from one album and simply made a snap judgment but as a musician you wouldnt do that, right? Try listening to her or continue to troll boards and randomly trash her if it somehow makes you feel better about yourself, she really doesnt care if you think her music is garbage because the reality is its not. The reality is that if you truly enjoy good popular music you are probably unknowingly missing out. Try listening one her albums from start to finish and repeating it a few times without any major distractions. I would suggest doing this with Red, Speak Now, Fearless or her live album Speak Now Worldwide Live which was the first I listened to and it hooked me right in. She may not be your cup of tea but if you really have a head for music your attitude about her being garbage will change.
