So Im doing an assignment on the death penalty, and some of the statistics are crazy. In short, I no longer believe in the death penalty in practice because of the racial bias amongst the jurors. In 97% of reviewed cases, there was some version of racial bias (either based on the defendant or the victims race). Of all of the people ever put to death, 57% are white compared to 35% black, which is extremely disproportionate considering 62% of inmates are black and 10% are white (2010 stats). Also, in death sentence cases (every death sentence case in the US has involved a homicide), 76% of the victims were white and only 15% were black... Which shows racial bias in both cases on the part of the jury. 50% of homicide victims are black and 42% are white. I hate seeing the system failing based on peoples prejudice or personal bias.
