So, Ive already been dragged into a Christmas argument here 2 days - TopicsExpress

So, Ive already been dragged into a Christmas argument here 2 days before Halloween. I find these ridiculous arguments to be both fun and annoying. I think its very similar to the atheist church arguments, where someones dislike for something has so skewed their view that theyll use any shitty argument to bolster their claims. 1. Their arguments are usually incoherent. Atheist church-haters will sometimes say things about looking like a religion, but most of the time they simply seem to be saying they personally hate it. The anti-christmas people are similarly incoherent. I rarely get them to state their exact argument. Are they really saying that there is no such thing as secular Christmas or are they trying to put a percentage on it? I rarely find out. 2. They both rely on dictionary definitions as prescriptive. 3. In a similar vein, they rely on origins as definitional, although thats really messed up with the Christmas arguments as the origins are pagan. 4. They disregard culture and history and/or they fixate on one particular statistic that they think explains everything. 5. Some of them show a shocking social isolation. Ive seen church-haters say that people who need community are weak. And Ive seen christmas arguments where I wasnt certain the person lived in the same galaxy as me, since they seemed so out of touch with normal cultural practices about Christmas. So, anyway, just some pet peeves of mine.
