So once we had the Twelve Days of Christmas, but now, clearly, its the 28-34 days of Christmas (depending on where Thanksgiving lands. And now we seem intent on naming them all, as well. Started with Black Friday, but now well, its a month of commerce celebration...and then, you know, theres that baby-in-a-manger thing, or winter-solstice-thing, or Saturnalia thing... Or we could just call it the epilogue and be done with it... Okay, snark aside, of the new named days, this one is the best, in my opinion: Small Business Saturday. This is where people can know that their $$$$ are going to support that which they truly love. You wont find the deals of the big box stores, of course, but youll find...service, and people who hand-pick their goods, or even hand-make their goods. The independent comic stores, game stores, book stores, the hobby shops, the art galleries, the small family retailer - yeah, these guys and gals. If youre going out shopping, this is where youll find people who love what you love. Also, if you have favorite authors, many are now selling their books via on-line stores, of course. Why? because the downward pressure on prices from the giant retailers has made writing a part-time endeavor for so many writers. So support your local merchants - youll lose a lot if they go away. And, yeah, of course Ill give a nod out to authors, as well! If youre going to buy a book anyway, why not get it signed and personalized and from the source? With one HUGE caveat: if you can...because yes, your biggest responsibility with your hard-earned money is to yourself and your family, and from me and from every author I know, I can assure you that we appreciate those readers who get our books from the library as much as those who buy (even those who buy from our stores). But not pirate sites...pirates sites have clobbered the writers. Happy SBS. Bob ps. Okay, back to venting dwarf frustration...and stuff.
