So the task of amassing and training a squad falls to Mark, a loner who seems lost, both existentially and physically. The film shows him standing around as he’s thinking about what to do, how to walk, what his name is. Im finding out that each critic has his own take on Mark. Most are fairly closely in line with the above statement. grantland/hollywood-prospectus/foxcatcher-serial-true-crime/ I agree with the reviewers characterization of the character named Mark Schultz. However, Mark was built by Dan Futterman, Max Frye, Bennett Miller and Channing Tatum. Hes a fascinating character mainly because of the fact that conflicting characteristics of emotional fragility and mental toughness simply cannot be embodied in the same person. Wrestlers are vulnerable to losing enough as it is but the fact that I was financially destitute facing unimaginable odds competing against scores of professional soviet block wrestlers created even greater vulnerability and instability. The reason I went to Foxcatcher was to alleviate this financial and environmental instability. I needed a secure and stable training environment. Any disruption in my stability was magnified due to the high level of competition I was fighting against. The fact is this. I was constantly vulnerable to losing my stable training environment. As anyone in my situation knows stability is the most important aspect needed to win. When I was fired from Stanford it threw me into a desperate situation but I was too proud to go begging for my job back. Maybe getting me to quit wrestling was the intention. Coincidentally thats why du Pont called, with promises of stability and money. Again...lies. Enough money to survive but no stability. No support from USAWrestling also caused instability in my training environment. The film-makers twisted this instability and vulnerability into a very different characteristic involving my personality....EMOTIONAL FRAGILITY. In real life I am the antithesis of emotional fragility. Some of the more intelligent critics can see through the fiction and understand no one an be both emotionally fragile and an Olympic Wrestling Champion.
