So today this thing happened at work that i am still not certain - TopicsExpress

So today this thing happened at work that i am still not certain how to feel about: A couple with two kids came in and were generally being pretty obnoxious. Not in that their needs were over the top but in that they just didnt respond to anything. This wasnt the issue. The moral dilemma was that they had ordered a bunch of stuff and were eating it just fine. About half an hour after that, the lady comes up and asks was there bacon in the mac and cheese? I replied well it has pancetta She interrupted so? Which is essentially just a fancy type of bacon How am i supposed to know that? She shouts. I can get you something else if yo- She interrupted me again with it should be marked! I turn around and look up at the clearly marked menu above my head in which she ordered from originally... the sign said 3 Cheese Mac and Cheese w/ Pancetta. I asked her again if she would like to replace it with anything else, but she just kept shouting how am i supposed to know what Pancetta is? I DONT EAT PORK! There is no way for me to answer this question and not take leaps and bounds as per her upbringing so i clearly left it rhetorical. A few minutes later, she corners another employee and does the same thing. He makes the same offers to reimburse or replace the items and at this point customers are watching the second showing of this song and dance, only with my understudy (C-). After literally not responding to any attempts to fix the situation, she grabs her children by the hands and storms into the bathroom. After the four of them storm out angrily, i go into the bathroom and immediately turn around because the smell and site was horrifying. There was vomit on everything. Stalls covered, urinal, covered, sink full and cover, and dear god... the floor was a mine field of terrible vomit piles. I understand her anger in the situation. I understand there are cultures and even just individuals who absolutely do not eat pork. So her rage, disgust, and extreme behavior is not a mystery to me. How WAS she supposed to know Pancetta was just fancy Italian speak for bacon? How was i supposed to fix this? The no pork rule was not made explicit when she ordered the 3 Cheese Mac and Cheese w/ Pancetta, so were we to assume they didnt know what Pancetta was and warn against it based on assumption of cultural beliefs? Nothing in the initial exchange, nor upon receiving the food and eating most of it would have even suggested there was a concern. They were a young couple with to very young kids. They had sick ass high tops, the dude rocked a bulls snapback, and she had a p tight crew neck/dark denim look. Nothing about them on face value suggested a concern. I know it was genuine anger and disgust during the fallout too. It wasnt just a ploy to get free stuff, because we offered, and she refused. It has just been bugging deeply all night. Like, literally nothing i can think of suggested that either of us were wrong in the whole thing... i just felt terrible about it for the rest of the night... also there was a family sized amount of vomit, so it was a team effort to DESTROY our bathroom. I dont blame them, nor do i feel the inherent need to justify the whole pancetta IS bacon argument because not everyone has learned that or has even been confronted by it. Its arrogant to assume education in things like that are anything more than privilege, so the notion is not comforting... its just not. These poor brown babies looked terrified when their mother grabbed them out of their seats and headed straight to the bathroom. There was just nothing i could do... it was just a thing that happened today that i am still pretty mixed up about.
