Some opposites make fascinating couples. They embrace and create a special magic. Bitter & sweet. Light & shadow (think black and white photography). Or jumbo & shrimp. Just kidding. But some opposites cannot exist in the same moment. They can dance in and out of the same space, but it is impossible for them to share the stage at once. For your consideration: gratitude and worry. With Thanksgiving (here in the U.S.) just ahead, I catch myself making mini gratitude lists: in my head, on used the back of Trader Joe’s receipts, under my breath. This is the week I like to send out a few random thank you notes and because of email and FaceBook, this exercise is totally paperless and free! Wait; that goes on the list grateful for accessible ways to practice gratitude! But I digress. Life is full of plenty of pain, struggle, chaos, and imperfection. With all of the bad news that vies for attention, it’s easy for worry and it’s siblings self-pity & cynicism to take the stage. The moment worry enters, gratitude vanishes. Like two sides of the same coin it’s possible to flip back and forth between gratitude and worry in schizophrenic frenzy. But they will not embrace. Or even hold hands. Most days I coast along on the look out for moments of appreciation. Some days I power lounge with low-grade cynicism. Whether frenzied, coasting, or power lounging, it’s impossible to maintain focus on both gratitude and worry at the same time. I cant have it both ways.
