Something Ive noticed in recent years is how Ive had a structural shift in the way I look at applications installed on my PC. I used to be a bit OCD about meticulously organizing my Program Files folders so that all apps were installed in the appropriately taxonimized folder tree (Design Apps, Media Apps, Utilities, Games, etc.). This was a carry-over from DOS days and stuck with me well into using XP and even early days with Win7/8. However, Ive noticed over the last 12-18 months that I stopped caring. At first I thought it was because I was getting lazy, but I believe its actually just the OS has become much better at managing the separation of core code and created files. Sure, the whole My Documents has been there for ages, and perhaps Im just a little slow to adapt. But in recent years Ive simply never needed to wade through the file tree of my Program Files folder and thus have no need for a categorized organization to do so. Uninstall typically no longer leaves a trace, and Im rarely hunting around worried about what an app may have left behind. Its still not perfect, and plenty of apps make my file system look like a hotel room under a black light. But its obviously improved enough that I no longer stress about it. Now my local server, GIT and SVN structure ... that needs work.
