Speaking as my Doctor self now...I have to speak on this. As despicable as the Ray Rice video is, ( we needed to see it to get the full gravity of the assault), it is not appropriate for network television. Our children and grandchildren are often present for the 6-7 oclock news each night. Graphically showing any video of assault more than once or twice, initially assaults the viewer. The mind then begins to be desensitized to it in an attempt to protect itself. A woman being knocked out and dragged away by her mate is never something that we should become visually desensitized to. Im also so distressed at what this must be doing to the victim. We are aware that we should not on network news, watch the World Trade Center being destroyed, or people being assaulted or killed (be-headed or tortured). Ms. Rice, despite what we may feel about her choices, was brutally assaulted and should not have that shown again and again on television. In the video, her exposed body is not even blurred out. I wonder if this would happen if there were others in the video. She is a woman. She is deserving of some semblance of dignity as we draw much needed attention to Domestic Violence. She has a child and family members. These are the subtle things that we often dont look at in the reporting of information. Once, twice-then no more. Do not have your children watch this video. They dont need to be taught be seeing it, they need to be taught by watching you in your relationships. If you wouldnt want your daughter, sister, Mother to be seen again and again in that scene- then you should not want it for Ms. Rice.
