Speculative character interpretation time! So, Wormtail is - TopicsExpress

Speculative character interpretation time! So, Wormtail is described as being distinctly untalented as a wizard and attaching himself to greater wizards (like James, Sirius, Lupin and Voldemort). But from the evidence this seems completely untrue. Peter was able to become an Animagus, destroy a street with one spell, defeat Bertha Jorkins in a duel, track down Voldemort, restore Voldemort and use the Killing Curse (which is specifically stated to need powerful magic behind it) successfully with a wand whose allegiance he didnt have. These things very strongly suggest that he was much more powerful than anyone gave him credit for. All these things could also be said for Neville. He doesnt initially show a lot of talent and hangs out with more powerful wizards (and witches) like Harry and Hermione. And again, hes shown to have a lot more power than anyone thought. The difference is that Nevilles friends took the time to nurture his hidden talents and helped him to mature into a strong, brave wizard. Wormtails friends never did this, as far as we know; in Snapes memory we see that they belittled him at least occasionally and didnt make an effort to encourage him. What if this is why Pettigrew went Dark? So he could actually feel important and powerful, like he never had before? What if hed actually received the same kind of support as Neville? What if Neville /hadnt/? WoOoOoOo. ~Moody
