Strange Birds In Paradise CHANNEL: SBS ONE BROADCAST: Wednesday 23, July 2014 3.35am (early hours) Strange Birds in Paradise, the critically acclaimed feature documentary by Charlie Hill Smith, journeys into the secret life of West Papua and paints a fascinating picture of music, culture and repression from one of the last great wildernesses on earth. Strange Birds in Paradise continues to ask the big questions, such as whether the world is watching as West Papua spirals further into genocide, political oppression and environmental disaster. The documentary is a richly textured document of the freedom movement in West Papua. It traces the lives of two West Papuan refugees, Donny Roem and Jacob Rumbiak, living in Melbourne, and their connection to the outlawed folk songs of their homeland. Donny, a recent exile, and Jacob, a former child soldier in the West Papuan resistance movement, are recording folk songs with renowned rock musicologist David Bridie. Also at the session is their friend, Charlie Hill-Smith. Charlie has a passion for contact across cultures which has led him to forge close friendships with the Melanesian and Javanese families he met as a teenage exchange student. Hearing stories of escape, oppression and exile from Jacob and Donny, listening to the defiant songs of murdered musician Arnold Ap, Charlie wants to know how these two vibrant cultures could be at war and how the rest of the world seemingly doesnt care. This film is his search for an answer.
