Students all across Australia today are wishing Christopher Pyne a very un-happy birthday. Why? Because he has given us so many gifts since he became Education Minister: * 20% cut to the Commonwealth Grant Scheme and change to its indexing (additional ~10% cut) which is the public funding for university courses * Deregulation of university fees which will allow universities to charge whatever they want for an education = $100, 000 degrees * Addition of real interest onto student loans up to 6% p.a. compounding annually even when the graduate is unemployed, raising a family or volunteering * Decrease in the salary threshold at which graduates have to start paying back their student loans * Changes to Newstart and Youth Allowance so that under 30s won’t get financial assistance for the first 6 months of unemployment under strict earn or learn policy A party... its the least we could do.
