TACKLING URBAN SECURITY IN NIGERIA Over 48 hours ago, scores of residents of Damaturu, the Yobe state capital were killed in an explosion that rocked a football viewing centre. The explosion was said to occurred soon after the World Cup game between Brazil and Mexico kicked off around 8 pm local time. Medical personnel on duty at the Sani Abacha Specialists Hospital in Damaturu the Yobe State capital, were overwhelmed with the emergency. The bombing incident that occurred along the ‘Tsamiyan Lilo’ area of the Yobe state capital could have been avoided if specific preventive guideline was produced by Nigeria Security Services and distributed to viewing centres and drinking bars which currently gets high volume of customers due to the ongoing World Cup. Over one week ago, TGS produced a security report providing 14 steps for improving security in viewing centres and that report on page 5 highlighted that Yobe State would be bombed! Yes, it happened... It is time for Nigerians to improve their own security awareness as Nigeria Security Services appears to be overwhelmed... Yesterday, Nigeria Security Services drew Nigeria populace attention to possible hijack of petrol tanker for terrorist activities heading to Abuja with the same old school approach see something and report it and it is completely different from the approach adopted by Imo State Government which was holistic... You will assume that the security services would temporarily ban petrol tankers movement in specific areas during rush hours time in Abuja - 1. Identify permitted routes for essential and emergency petrol tankers to use with 24 hours permission approval needed to use that route 2. Allocate time slot for petrol tankers to enter Abuja (like 2am to 4am) with police or security escort 3. Provide Petrol tankers with a location outside Abuja for them to stay as standby location and have security operators at the location to check drivers identify for clearance only not extortion. However, all the above measures must be introduced with the support of petrol tankers associations and with clear protocols. That said, we are now at a critical stage and real time intelligent analysis reveals that there are still more havoc to be unleash on Nigeria populace by Boko Haram and other Al-Qaeda inspired groups operating in Nigeria. The following terrorist acts could unfold as we approach 2015 in Nigeria - - Attempted terrorist attack on a known Nigeria International Airport - Mumbai style attack on a 5 star hotel in Lagos or Abuja - Terrorist train derail and attack on passengers - VEID bomb blast in a religious crusade - Attempted bomb blast in an opposition political rally The attempted bomb blast of a political rally and airport is meant to attract world wide reaction and inner security tension to trigger military intervention but the military need to be alert... Nigeria does not need a coup détat promoted by greedy politicians or motivated by a specific ethnic group! What we need is a non-partisan approach to resolving Nigeria insurgency challenges.
