TALKING ABOUT BUSINESS CONSULTANCY: Many times I have been asked questions by people about business consultancy and how they can enter and succeed in it. From my close to 10 years experience I have concluded that this is a business with a very long learning curve. One should develop a long-term view when thinking of entering. It is not a business you enter and expect quick gains unless you already have experience on the areas you plan to specialise in. The mistake many make is thinking you can easily and quickly launch a consultancy career without serving your time learning the ropes and earning the confidence of clients. However, the time spent on this process though long and weary eventually pays off big time once you establish your niche and develop valuable expertise and experience in it. Those who enter the industry with a one night stand mentality end up messing with projects and leave a trail of destruction in their wake. These are the ones who have given the industry a bad name leaving the genuine players to be subjected to stringent and rigorous scrutiny that was not the case before. Part-timers and quick buck chasers have also done much harm to the industry as some chew more than they can swallow thus littering the consultancy landscape with unfinished and half-baked reports. Regarding marketing it is a business that feeds largely on past performance and hard earned reputation. One should not frown at opportunities to be subcontracted for small tasks in major projects as that is one of the greatest ways of earning experience and confidence. Once you have earned the confidence of the industry getting jobs becomes easy and negotiating even at your own terms is never a big deal. Thus, nobody should be intimidated by the question as to how they will get their first client. Consultancy is a career with a good payoff and great prospects in the virgin Kenyan market. It is a career where one learns so much. Every assignment is an opportunity to learn new things and stock up ones reservoir of knowledge. Business consultancy is a fulfilling career with the results of ones work touching many lives and having long term and far reaching impact. Also, it allows one flexible working times and lots of free time sometimes. This free time can be used for further personal development and contribution to society. It is worth a try.
