TBT. Back in my late twenties, I became enchanted with the work of Claudio Monteverdi while running a classical and jazz music department in a wonderfully large music store. Monteverdi, like Albrecht Durer and Albert Einstein were these tremendous synthesists of prior thought that catapulted their present day into a new radically new worldview. At least that is the way I saw it. Gerard Lesne about 25 years ago became part of a Monteverdi recording revival of this 16th century musical genius. I still consider Monteverdis Vespers of 1610 one of the crowning artistic achievements of Western Civilization when you place it in the context of music history. Not sure where Ego Flos Campi sits in Monteverdis output. Its date of publication appears to be unknown. Sure has the feel of sumptuous rapture that you get from Nigra Sum in Claudios 1610 Vespers. The concert coming up with Gerard Lesne in Vancouver should be a good one, if for no other reason to hear one of the great counter-tenors of our time. The concert is on Sunday, November 9, 3pm at the Orpheum Annex. See Early Music Vancouvers FB page for more deets.
