THE FIRST FOOD REPLICATOR? ========================= Well while Gene Rodenberry saw the possibility of the first food replicator through his Star Trek television series, we are on that path with the worlds technology, but is this thing really that perfect yet? I would think not. Its one thing to have the ingredients on hand to make a fast pizza, but another thing to have universal food packs where a machine can form any food or recipe you may desire. This is truly a richs mans toy coming into the market place right now. I remember when the first voice activated telephone came out some 33 years ago and it wasnt all too sharp at taking voice commands. In fact, it was a piece of junk, but it was the first attempt toward voice command. These days, you can call a bank or insurance company and talk with the computer easy enough when it comes to voice commands. The rest is having the wisdom to create the right algorithmns to outguess what the caller will be wanting and then have a complete enough set of instructions to get them were they need to be. Its not that the computer really is thinking for itself just yet. Its just outguessing the algorithms that makes it seem alive. Given Dolly, our first cloned sheep didnt last more than 4 years before she fell apart, I really dont see this replicator as something to go rushing off to spend $1,000 on just yet. We are a ways away from using universal plasma food packs that can be used to form any kind of food we desire, but this news article at least tells us someone is working on the problem of a universal food dispenser that can work with molecular design and create any kind of food we desire. I suppose if this comes to pass, it sure will save on a lot of killing of the animals we use in our domestic stock as a food source and will put a lot of farmers out of business in the time ahead. Wonder what they will do for work when that day comes? And what are we going to do with the over population of cows, pigs, chickens and other domestic animals once we dont need them anymore? Seems the future brings answers, but also new problems to contend with as well. Thoughtfully, Kevin F.
