THE HABIT OF SILENCE by Rev. Fr. Martin Badejo (29/09/10) Silence is a lot more than just not talking. The habit of silence is one of the most difficult habits to cultivate especially in our time, and it is the most necessary habit in other to live a virtuous life because God never speaks or reveals himself to anyone except through silence (Ps 46:10; 4:8, Lk 2:51). Our communication line with God is made network-not-busy when we are silent; when we cut out the static of the worlds distractions. But unfortunately, we no longer value silence, for example; how do wake up? Alarm? What do we do as soon as we wake? Reach out for our phone(s)/gadget(s) or bible(s)? Pray? How do we pray? Silently? Or waking up the neighbours? What next? Our radio(s)/sound system(s)? Silence. Introspection. The noise around us is so much that we can hardly hear God speak to us. How about the noise in our hearts? Distractions from what we see, and hear, and think of? If we are able to develop the habit of silence, nothing can hit us enough to take us away from God. (Rom 12:1-2) We should allow ourselves to be transformed from the inside, then our communication with God becomes uninterrupted. Silence between man and man - is very good when positively geared, it breeds respect and renewal. It is more demanding though, to be silent towards man especially when we are offended. Only from within can we maintain silence and reflect it outwardly. Silence helps us to grow in virtues like forgiveness, patience and gentleness. It steers us towards meditative and contemplative prayer. Many of us are after peace of mind and not peace of soul, but there cannot be peace of mind without peace of soul -Fulton Sheen
