“THE PEOPLE OF IKORODU CONSTITUENCY II, DID NOT MAKE A MISTAKE WHEN THEY DECIDED TO VOTE FOR HON ADEBIMPE AKINSOLA TO REPRESENT THEM IN 2011,” -Prince Adesegun Ogunlewe Many lawmakers in Nigeria both at state and federal levels have been accused of neglecting the people of their constituencies after voting them in. Some were accused of not even coming home at regular intervals to render account of their stewardship to the people that voted them into office. Others wait until when another election period draws nearer before making their impact felt by the people. But one person who has made covenant of providing quality service to his people and has not disappointed them since 2011 general elections, when she was elected as member of Lagos State House of Assembly, is Hon. (Mrs.) Adebimpe Akinsola representing Ikorodu constituency II. On Wednesday, June 25th, 2014, in Igbogbo, Hon. Adebimpe Akinsola held a town hall meeting with people of her constituency. The occasion was also used to empower about 300 people from the constituency. The event which attracted many political stalwarts from the area was held at Homat Events centre, Igbogbo. The chairman of the occasion and former Lagos State Head of Service (HOS), Prince Adesegun Ogunlewe, did not mince words when he extolled the virtue of the lawmaker. Ogunlewe stated that the people of Ikorodu constituency II, did not make a mistake when in 2011, they decided to vote for Hon Adebimpe Akinsola to represent them. “I think you can see by yourself that we did not make mistake in what we did in 2011 by voting for Hon. Adebimpe Akinsola,” he said. Ogunlewe who described democracy as the best form of government because of its inherent benefits to the people promised that the people of Ikorodu constituency II will return Hon. Adebimpe Akinsola to the state House of Assembly in 2015 and urged the people to vote for her when the time comes. “Judging by what she has done, I don’t think she needs to talk much before the people are convinced.” Ogunlewe urged the people of Ikorodu to vote for APC candidates in 2015 general elections seeing what Fashola’s government has done for the people of the area, especially the re-construction of Ikorodu-Mile 12 road described to be one of the best in the country. On his part, a leader of APC in Lagos, Asiwaju Olorunfunmi Basorun, described Hon. Adebimpe Akinsola as a worthy daughter of the area whose impact has been felt by the people and urged the people to support her in every respect. “Since she grew up from Teachers College till date, she has always been giving tremendous service to the community development,” he said. Hon. Adebimpe Akinsola who was excited to be in the mist of the people of her constituency said as a lawmaker, you are expected to be closer to the people that gave you the mandate and also provide them with the dividends of democracy. She further stated that apart from the empowerment programme, she came home every time to meet with the people and organized stakeholders’ meetings to educate them on laws made by the state House of Assembly that affects the people. She cited the traffic law made by the state government sometimes ago which many people did not have proper understanding of the law as an example. “I felt a lot of people did not understand what that law means, I then organized a stakeholders meeting to educate them about the law and correct the wrong impressions held by many people.” She further stated that her decision to empower some people this time when the general elections is very close was not aimed at getting people’s vote again in 2015. “I want to tell everybody that what is happening here today is not intended to woo Ikorodu Constituency II voters, because every year since I was elected into the House of Assembly, I have not missed a programme like this that always bring joy to the lives of the people,” she said. To be able to raise enough fund to execute the programme, Hon. Adebimpe Akinsola said she begins saving from the beginning of the year or join local contribution. She admitted not getting any financial assistance from any source to execute the empowerment programme. As the lawmaker reminiscence on her contributions to debates on the floor of the state House of Assembly, one particular debate she would not forget is the debate on the sale of Egbin power plant to a foreign firm. She stated that her contribution to the debate on the matter was historic because she believes the sale of the Power Plant will not augur well for the people of the state and Ikorodu in particular. She commended party leaders and traditional rulers and people of the constituency that made the day a memorable day. About 300 persons that were selected by party leaders and stakeholders from the three Local Council Development Areas in the constituency, benefitted from the empowerment initiative in which she gave out Sewing Machines, Hair Driers, Generators, Rechargeable Fans, CocaCola Products, Provisions, Cash Gifts, etc. She explained that the decision to give out Cash to some people was based on the fact that it was difficult for them to purchase the needed materials for their business. One of the beneficiaries of the empowerment scheme, Mrs.Mustapha Rabiatu, commended Hon. Adebimpe Akinsola for the Gift and promised that she will make proper use of the Gift. “I am grateful for the Gift and pray that the almighty God will reward her for the gesture. Now my business which has suffered due to epileptic power supply in the country will now experience a new lease of life,” she said. Hon. Adebimpe Akinsola’s deep concern for the wellbeing of the people of Ikorodu constituency II was also demonstrated last year when the state Government delegation visited Igbogbo to access the State of Roads in the area. At the epoch event Hon. Adebimpe Akinsola said “Our Roads in Igbogbo are in terrible state and we needed intervention of the Government. I have no doubt that the State Government will, as a matter of urgency, start work on the Roads inspected and the seriousness of the Government could be seen in the inclusion of Special Adviser on Works, Mr. Ganiyu Johnson, in the delegation.”
