THE VITAMIN C BOOSTER AND NATURAL FEVER REMEDIES We are in the brunt of flu season here in Lancs and yours truly got hit with flu last week, clearly as you can imagine I was not impressed. I woke up and literally felt like I was hit with the plague and I could literally feel my fever burning up by the second. Today I want to chat about what happens when we get a fever and the steps we can take to help us through it naturally. *Please note, that I am not a M.D and I am just sharing natural suggestions/tips. These are not intended to replace any medical advice or medication given by a doctor. Let’s first chat about the role of the fever before we go any further because a fever, for some, can be a scary thing to deal with and most people feel safest when they can reach for over the counter medication. The Role of A Fever A fever actually raises the body’s internal temperature to create an inhospitable internal environment for viruses and bacteria. So essentially a fever is actually trying to help rid the body of any illness within and it’s acting as a protective mechanism. Symptoms include: chills, dizziness, loss of appetite, deliria, low energy, headaches – migraines, sweating, body aches, infection (viral/bacterial) and rashes (sign for infants especially.) MY PERSONAL REGIME 1 liter of filtered warm water with squeezed lemon juice added in, a great way to not only stay hydrated but to help to stimulate the liver to flush out the toxins. I sip on coconut water regularly, which is crucial for replenishing electrolytes lost with sweating and the increased internal body temperature. 1 bottle of kombucha sipped on throughout the day to help keep the good bacterial in balance within the gut. When we are sick, we may have an off balance of bad to good bacteria. Vegetable soups cooked with a piece of kombu for nourishment and minerals. The kombu is a great seaweed to add to broths and soups to help replenish minerals and alkalize the body. Just remember to remove and throw out the kombu strip before serving. Ample sleep and rest. I spent three days in bed and put everything else behind so I could focus on sleeping and getting the proper rest I needed. I supplement with Vitamin C, D, oregano oil and Boiron Oscillococcinum a homeopathic product I love for fever and flu symptoms. Below is a list of other beneficial foods, spices and herbs that help with the flu and fever. Dried shitakes, made into a broth or tea Barely tea or whole grain barely porridge (Traditional Chinese Medicine) Bone or vegetable broths Cayenne, ginger, garlic Warm unsweetened apple sauce with a squeeze of lemon, sea salt and cinnamon Poached pears – poached in water with a sprinkle of sea salt and cinnamon Peppermint and elderberry tea Sea vegetables in broths Green apples – peeled, grated, mixed with warm water (great for children) Daikon radish Juices – high in green vegetables and vitamin C rich fruits and vegetables (See recipe below) Note: consume juices, cold fruits and vegetables once the fever starts to break. Below I have a beautiful juice recipe rich in vitamin C that I consumed the morning my fever broke. It’s really refreshing and best consumed first thing in the morning. By mid day you will already start to feel more refreshed, when paired with the rest of your health routine. Ingredients 1 blood orange 1 grapefruit ½ lemon 3 large carrots 1 green apple Simply juice all ingredients, pour into a large glass and enjoy.
