TOXIC algae which can cause nausea, cramps and numbness has been found in New Zealands Selwyn River - prompting a warning that people and animals should keep out of it. The blue-green algae was found at the area of the Selwyn River at Whitecliffs Domain on South Island. Exposure may cause skin rashes, nausea, stomach cramps, tingling and numbness around the mouth and fingertips, Dr Ramon Pink, the Canterbury medical officer of health, said. She said people and animals - especially dogs - should stay out of the water, and no one should drink the water from the river even if the water is boiled. Reticulated town water supplies are safe, she said. If animals show sign of illness after coming into contact with algae, they should be taken to a vet immediately. The algae looks like a dark brown or black mat attached to rocks and often has a strong musty smell. theaustralian.au/news/latest-news/toxic-algae-found-in-nz-river/story-fn3dxix6-1226805874175
