TRUE MEANING OF DAMAN OR SELF CONTROL Our mind can be divided into two parts HIGHER MIND & LOWER MIND. Higher mind is that which is connected to our sense of I-ness, sense of doership. The higher mind is our conscious mind. Whenever it does something we become aware of it. So the higher mind has the faculty to discriminate between what is wrong and what is right hence it can govern and guide our activity. It can guide and control the activities of the senses. It is the doorway to creation. Our power of creativity is based on higher mind. So all development in different branch knoswledge is due to higher mind. The higher mind is missing from all other creature exept man. The lower mind is the product of higher mind but it is detached from the ego. It is the degeneration of the higher mind. All the other animals have only this lower mind called instinct. Humans have both. So there is always a tug of war between the higher and the lower minds. Many of our activities are done instinctively. When we do anything instintively i.e. without awareness we forget them. Our memory depends on which mind is active. Now DAMAN means using conscious mind more and more and to be guided by instincts.
