TUESDAYS TUTORIAL: NATURAL FLORIDA GOALS PART 1. Our goal - TopicsExpress

TUESDAYS TUTORIAL: NATURAL FLORIDA GOALS PART 1. Our goal have changed. I have been discussing goal changes with our admins and the below changes are the result. When Natural Florida first began, we had education and conservation as part of our goals. With Bill Chambers creation of Florida Wild, we de-emphasized conservation. Now, we are officially dropping conservation, not because we do not believe in it, but because we believe in Florida Wild and the fantastic job being done there to address conservation. With education as part of our goal, Natural Florida has two areas of focus. The first is understanding wildlife and nature. The second is helping members who want to advance their photography skills in the area of Nature Photography. Tuesdays Tutorials will now begin to focus on these two areas of education. The sharing of understanding of wildlife and nature has been provided by some of our more experienced photographers who take the time to research their subjects more than most of us. Mark Alexander Trainor, Michael Dye, and Daniel D. Dye II immediately come to mind for their knowledgeable posts and wonderful photography. For certain, their are many, many more who provide great photography with informative posts. Our albums are all about education or special events. Our wonderful admin team ask photographers if they can share exceptional photographs to various albums to help people identify a wild variety of Florida wildlife. With regard to educating members about wildlife and nature, we are doing a pretty good job, but will continue to find ways to improve. While I have had 3 documents from the North American Nature Photography Association (NANPA) included under the Files tab located beneath the banner, we have not been doing a very good job of educating our membership regarding nature photography. To improve in this area, we have incorporated some of NANPAs standards into our goals.... but dont panic! The inclusion of NANPAs standards into our goals is to educate members. We are not going to require members to use NANPAs truth in captioning terms - this is entirely optional for those photographers who want a deeper understanding of what nature photography is and is not. Photographers who want to participate in Nature Photography contests or submit to Nature Photography publications, an understanding of NANPAs definitions, ethical field practices, etc., becomes essential for success. For most of us, understanding of NANPAs captioning terms will help us understand how much a photograph has been processed and if it is of something wild or captive. The understanding of NANPAs Principles of Ethical Field Practices will be better for the wildlife we photograph and safer for us as photographers. Again, we are not going to require using the terms wild or captive as all photos here are supposed to be wild. However, everyone needs to know how wild and domestic are defined by NANPA - and sometimes other organizations. Knowing the difference between a nature photograph and a Photo Illustration is very important for nature photography publication and contests. Nature photography severely limits post processing to the point where Ansel Adams would probably have to label much of his work Photo Illustration if he were using todays digital technology and standards. Again, this is an educational process, not a requirement for posting. If you have questions, the NANPA documents in the files may answer them... You will begin seeing some posts from me and other admins on occasion where we post a Photo Illustration with comments to explain why it is a photo illustration. Some of these will not be so obvious... some will. To help understand, our first reply will include a photo of the original images so that you can compare the two to see what changes were made to the image that resulted in the image no longer being a nature photograph, but a Photo Illustration instead. Again, these posts are for education. For now, I thank you for taking the time to read this lengthy post and hope you continue reading the goals. -Don Griffiths, Founder/Administrator Create a great day & great images along the way... :) ****************************************** Goal 1. To promote the natural beauty of Florida by encouraging members at all skill levels to share their photography and art. Goal 2. To promote respect for the contributions of group members by encouraging members to “LIKE” other others posts and photography & art pages. Goal 3. To promote courtesy by encouraging members to ask photographers before they SHARE an image. Goal 4. To promote conservation issues relevant to the state of Florida by encouraging members to join our sister group Florida Wild. Goal 5. To promote respect for and knowledge of Florida’s wildlife and natural environment by encouraging group members to research the subject and location of their images in order to include factual comments about their photographs or art. Goal 6. To promote the well-being of habitats, wildlife, and photographers by encouraging members to follow the North American Nature Photography Association (NANPA) “Principles of Ethical Field Practices” for Nature Photography. Goal 7. To promote public trust and acceptance by encouraging experienced members to use NANPA’s truth in captioning definitions to label photographs with “Wild,” “Captive,” or “Photo Illustration.” Goal 8. To create a positive and supportive atmosphere that respects the work of members by fostering encouragement of those less skilled, esprit de corps, and a sense of family. Goal 9. To maintain an environment suitable for parents & teachers to allow children to visit Natural Florida. Goal 10. To promote respect, compassion, and understanding of each other, wildlife, and the environment by encouraging the application of the spiritual law of reciprocity to all things. What is this law? Do for others as you would have them do for you; do not do to others what you do not want done to you... Be kind to each other. Respect each other.
