Taranaki drilling has been operating for decades with a fair safety record, thankfully very few incidents and no major spill. However, these new wells are doing so in largely unknown deepwater environments that are seismically unstable and that have not had any previous drilling. The permit process and the explorations under way are nothing short of corrupt in their disdain for due process and their abandonment of common sense. To continue multiple oil explorations off our coastline without immediate access to and complete control of all emergency spill response equipment is ecologically risky, fiscally negligent and just f’n stupid. All for what? A couple of hundred jobs and 5% of whatever the oil company eventually decides to declare as profit.
