Te Taitimu Trust Leadership for Life: Rangatahi kei Mua A Symposium Where: - Te Aute College When: - August 22nd 2014 Time: - 10am - 4.00pm He Kōrero: - Te Taitimu Trust is participating in a national suicide prevention programme. As part of the programme we will be holding a one day symposium on Rangatahi leadership at Te Aute College. Many answers to a range of contemporary problems lie with Rangatahi themselves and sothe Symposium will explore ways in which young people can exercise leadership in order to effect positive impacts on their own lives as well as their peers. Kaupapa: - 120 Year 9, 10 and 11 Rangatahi from selected secondary schools in Hawkes Bay will come together to discuss leadership and how, as leaders themselves, they can contribute to building strong and vibrant communities where Rangatahi are safe, more able to realise their full potential, and ready to face the future with confidence. Participants: - 10 Rangatahi from Years 9, 10 and 11 and one staff member from each school will be invited. Community leaders within Ngāti Kahungunu and from Napier and Hastings will also be invited to attend. Sir Mason Durie will be the Symposium keynote speaker. Te Taitimu Trust CE Zack Makoare and DrJames Graham will facilitate the day. Symposium Goals By the end of the Symposium participants will have: • A better understanding of themselves, their whānauand their community; • A better idea of how they might cope with contemporary challenges; and, • A better idea of how they might show leadership and help others who are struggling. Programme: 10.00am - Pōhiri in Te Whare o Rangi, Te Aute College 10.15am - Opening Remarks and Symposium Outline 10.30am - Morning Tea 11.00am - Keynote Address: Sir Mason Durie (Chair, Wakahourua, Māori & Pacific National Suicide Prevention Programme) 11.30am - Rangatahi Panel to discuss the Keynote Address 12.00pm - Questions from the floor to Sir Mason Durie andRangatahi Panel 12.30pm - Lunch 1.15pm - Workshops: Participants will form six groups witheach mentored by a health professional in attendance.Workshop themes will include: • Managing Facebook • Managing bullying • Managing highs • Managing lows • Managing the mobile • Managing whānau 2.30pm - Report back from Workshops 3.00pm - Open Forum 3.30pm - Symposium Summary 4.00pm - Poroaki Registration: - Could all schools please respond to Te Taitimu Trust by 5pm Friday July 25th 2014 to indicate whether or not you will be in attendance. This will assist the Symposium organisers to plan accordingly with the venue and catering in a timely manner before the August 22ndSymposium date. There is no registration fee for the Symposium.
