Tehran Prosecutor’s office: IRGC Intelligence unit has denied medical furlough for Hossein Ronaghi Maleki The Tehran Prosecutor’s office has informed Hossein Ronaghi Maleki’s family that the IRGC Intelligence division has denied their request for his medical furlough. According to the Kaleme website, the deputy-prosecutor said, “The IRGC has expressed that according to reports, Hossein Ronaghi Maleki took part in activities while on furlough in the past, therefore the request for his medical leave is denied even if his imprisonment is endangering his health.” The family of this political prisoner has on numerous occasions pleaded with the ruling establishment on behalf of Hossein Ronaghi Maleki. “We have made a multitude of written requests to various authorities of the Islamic Republic of Iran pleading for their help in rescuing our son, but so far to no avail. Hossein remains an innocent political prisoner who must be released.” Kaleme previously reported that in response to a formal complaint made by Hossein Ronaghi Maleki about the dismal situation of political prisoners behind bars and the lack of proper medical care, a judicial official responded, “Eventually you will die, the media will make some noise for two weeks and then everything will end.” Per his family, Hossein has told them during a visit that in protest of the authorities’ lack of care for the life and physical state of a human being, if nothing is changed he will embark on a hunger strike in the beginning of the month of Mordad [several weeks from now]. His family expressed their deep worry for the condition of their son and said they were told by the Tehran prosecutor’s office that the IRGC has denied medical furlough for Hossein and they must follow-up with his interrogators. His family said they are very concerned about Hossein’s health considering his decision to go on hunger strike will further aggravate his already poor physical state. “We don’t know what other judicial entity we can address that will listen to our plight and come to our assistance.” Hossein Ronaghi Maleki, in addition to his kidney disease now suffers from gastrointestinal bleeding and has been vomiting, prompting a physician’s order to refrain from taking the necessary medication for his kidney and prostate disease. The human rights activist who had been on medical furlough turned himself in at Evin prison on Tuesday May 21st after the ruling apparatus ordered him to return behind bar due to the presidential elections that were upcoming in June 2013. He was ordered to go back to prison even though he was inflicted with inflammatory prostate and bladder disease, and was under specialized care that was imperative for his recovery. Hossein Ronaghi Maleki was arrested during the aftermath of the contested presidential elections of 2009 by Intelligence agents. Judge Pir Abassi presiding over Branch 26 of the Revolutionary Court later handed him a 15-year prison sentence. On August 22, 2012 Hossein Ronaghi who had been on medical leave from prison was detained along with his father and brother, Ahmad and Hasan Ronaghi Maleki, along with 33 other volunteers and social activists who had gone to the aid of earthquake victims in the province of Azerbaijan. Ronaghi received a 2-year prison sentence handed on the charge of “gathering and collusion against national security” in the Azerbaijan earthquake zone. Per a ruling handed down by Branch 112 of the Tabriz Public Court, he was also sentenced to 6 months in prison on the charges of “endangering public health through distribution of moldy bread,” and “disobeying an officer.” With the additional rulings, the total sentence for Hossein Ronaghi Maleki increased to 17.5 years in prison.
