Thanks Cassidy for the update - that will allow me to talk about the Aussie girls! Everyone who knows the writer knows that he subscribes to the adage that winning is not a matter of life or death ........... its far more important than that, but I went to bed unusually content, in the early hours of the Brisbane morning. The Aussie 7s girls were the best team in Dubai on the weekend. They were beaten in the final by a courageous & desperate Kiwi team in a game where the Aussies didnt get the rub-of-the-green. But thats 7s and its part of what makes it the game it is. This time last year, NZ had had a great tournament but the Aussies came away with the silverware. A top 4 finish in each of the 6 tournaments this season, will, in all likelihood be the measure of mission accomplished. First objective achieved. Well done ladies! They played the final with a 3 girl bench, having lost Chloe Dalton & Vani Pelite to injury earlier in the tournament. On any other day theyd have probably won penalties in the lead up to the Kiwis first & third tries. The first (side entry at a ruck) resulted in a momentum shift, but the call on Shannon Parry was a heartbreaker. It was a match winning play from her which went unrewarded - a dominant tackle and world class pilfer in the 20th minute when shed have been empty of oxygen but full of lactic acid. 9 times out of 10 Rasta would have called in Shannons favour with the Kiwi clinging to the ball. Alicia Quirk was named player of the tournament & alongside her Charlotte Caslick was named in the Emirates Airline Dubai Rugby Sevens Dream Team. It was a fitting reward for girls that see themselves as a small link on a big cog. Thats what makes this Aussie team special - Quirky & Charlotte measure their success by the success of the team. That said - what about Sharni Williams & Shannon Parry?! I suspect leaving them out of the Dream Team was more about sharing the love than being fair dinkum, they were outstanding in an outstanding team on this first step on the Road to Rio.
