That men are reacting with surprise to this isnt shocking to me. Merely a symptom of the bigger male privilege world in which we live. It doesnt happen to them so it isnt a big deal - or were overacting and being dramatic. This isnt about race or class either, its about men intimidating women---period. Assault, rape and hazing are all children of male power - as is catcalling. And yes, good morning - from a stranger (or 100 strangers) as you pass on the street without eye contact or adjustment of pace is unwanted and unprovoked harassment. She did not respond in any way but one has to believe that if she did there would be some sort of request - probably for money. Its intended to force her to respond or react - no matter what the motivation its unacceptable. Its not a compliment, its a public display of power and control, plain and simple. Men - this is on our American streets - anywhere and everywhere - its directed at your wife, your daughter, your sister, your girlfriend, your grandmother - still think were overly sensitive or just cant take a compliment ??
