The 9 Biggest Diet Mistakes 0 BY WEBSITE EDITOR ON AUGUST 20, 2014 FOOD Before you reach for your next meal or snack, keep these tips in mind to keep you on the diet straight-and-narrow. 1. FOOD DEPRIVATION Food is not the enemy – it’s the large portions and overall lack of nutritional balance that is damaging to your waistline. 2. AVOIDING BREAKFAST “Break” the “fast” – you have gone for several hours with no food, which your body requires for energy and healthy metabolism. 3. JUICED UP Just because it’s a liquid doesn’t mean it doesn’t contribute to excess weight. Juices are packed with sugar, and offer little or no nutritional value. 4. DEHYDRATION More than 60 per cent of our body weight is water. You need it – drink it! It’s also a transporter of nutrients in the body. 5. FEAR OF FAT We need essential fatty acids for nutrient absorption. Include omega 3 fatty acids and mono-unsaturated fats in small amounts for optimal health. Avoid trans and saturated fats. 6. LOW FAT = FREE FOOD It may say “low fat” or “fat free” but check the calories, carbs, and sugar content. Read your labels carefully! 7. SALADS ONLY While salads offer us healthy fresh vegetables, watch out for their enemy counterpart of high-fat cream dressings, croutons, and bacon bits. Choose olive oil or vinaigrettes! 8. FRUIT, FRUIT, AND MORE FRUIT Fruit is good for us, but keep in mind the sugar they offer as well. Remember – the key is nutritional balance! 9. NIBBLING Snacking, munching, sampling, and popping bite-sized treats all add extra calories without you even noticing. Be careful! Exercise portion control!
