The Black-backed puff back has a very distinctive call - the male calls with a harsh click followed by a wheeeu and the female responds with a sssh sssshh. The courtship display involves the male fluffing out its spectacular white rump plumes, making it look a bit like a snowball, hence the Afrikaans name sneeubal. It mainly eats insects but is a fan of acacia buds. The nest is often decorated with lichen and bark, so that it is camouflaged on the forked branch it is bound to.
