The Changi Command and Control (C2) Centre could be used to coordinate future regional humanitarian efforts, said Minister for Defence Dr Ng Eng Hen at the ASEAN-US Defence Ministers Informal Meeting today. While the Changi C2 Centre was primarily set up for regional maritime security information sharing, its plug-and-play systems makes it suitable for coordinating Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief Operations, explained Dr Ng. The Changi C2 Centre houses the Information Fusion Centre (IFC), which is staffed by International Liaison Officers (ILOs). There are currently 15 ILOs from 13 countries working in the IFC, with linkages to 64 agencies across 34 countries. Said Dr Ng: We (already) had a set up for this and it seemed natural to say, Well, let’s offer this. The details of using the Changi C2 Centre for HADR coordination work is something which senior officials from the ASEAN member states will look into. Were not wishing that we will use it often but it’s something that we think (would prove) useful, added Dr Ng.
