The Chicago Railroad Fair was held in 1948-49 on the site of the Century of Progress Worlds Fair. On July 19, 1948 a Grand Parade was held to celebrate the fairs opening the next day. The widow of Casey Jones rode in an automobile at the head of the parade. The Fair drew thousands of visitors to Chicago to view exhibits from 37 railroad sponsors, including historic and modern equipment, during its two year run. The Fair was the brainchild of Francis V. Koval, the publicity manager of the Chicago and North Western Railroad to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the first train to run in Chicago. It was also a celebration of the role railroads played in the growth of the nation and the victory in World War II.
