The Holy Spirit and Jesus Christ The Holy Spirit and Jesus Christ are part of the Trinity, which is made up of 3 distinct persons: The Father, The Son (Jesus Christ), and the Holy Spirit. This can be seen in the Bible in 2 Corinthians 13:14 New International Version (NIV); 14 May the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all. In this write-up, we shall take a closer look at the relationship between the Holy Spirit and Jesus Christ. It can be seen that just as the Spirit of God, the agent of God’s life-giving purposes, was active in creation (Genesis 1:2), so also is the work of the Holy Spirit in the conception of Jesus Christ in the womb of the Virgin Mary (Matthew 1:18-20, Luke 1:34-35). Luke 1:34-35Amplified Bible (AMP)34 And Mary said to the angel, How can this be, since I have no [intimacy with any man as a] husband?35 Then the angel said to her, The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you [like a shining cloud]; and so the holy (pure, sinless) Thing (Offspring) which shall be born of you will be called the Son of God. The relationship between the Holy Spirit and Jesus Christ can also be seen in the story in the Bible where John the Baptist tells his disciples that he will baptize them with water but Jesus Christ shall baptize them with the Holy Spirit. John identified people with himself and his message of repentance by water baptism; while Jesus Christ who is coming after him was so much greater than him and He (Jesus Christ) would unite people to Himself by means of baptizing them with the Holy Spirit (Matt 3:11, Mark 1:8, Luke 3:16, John 1:33). When Jesus Christ went to be baptized by John the Baptist in River Jordan, in addition to water baptism, Jesus also received the Spirit of God that descended upon Him like a dove. Mark 1:9-10 Amplified Bible (AMP) 9 In those days Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan. 10 And when He came up out of the water, at once he [John] saw the heavens torn open and the [Holy] Spirit like a dove coming down [[a]to enter] [b]into Him. Prophet Isaiah prophesied in one of his sermon that a child (Messiah) would be born in Israel, who would set up a kingdom that is far greater than David’s kingdom and He will be empowered by the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit, in all His gifts and graces, shall not only come, but rest and abide upon Him (Jesus Christ); He shall have the Spirit not by measure, but without measure, the fullness of the Godhead in Him. Isaiah 11:1-2 Amplified Bible (AMP) 11 And there shall come forth a Shoot out of the stock of Jesse [David’s father], and a Branch out of his roots shall grow and bear fruit.(A)2 And the Spirit of the Lord shall rest upon Him—the Spirit of wisdom and understanding, the Spirit of counsel and might, the Spirit of knowledge and of the reverential and obedient fear of the Lord. God puts His Spirit upon Jesus Christ thereby making Him a servant of God and also a person that brings universal justice upon the earth. In contrast to the imperial ways of domination, God’s servant Jesus Christ exhibits mercy and life-giving justice to all. Matthew 12:17-18 Amplified Bible (AMP)17 This was in fulfillment of what was spoken by the prophet Isaiah,18 Behold, My Servant Whom I have chosen, My Beloved in and with Whom My soul is well pleased and [a]has found its delight. I will put My Spirit upon Him, and He shall proclaim and [b]show forth justice to the nations. In the earthly ministry of Jesus Christ, we can see that Jesus Christ was full of the Holy Spirit and He was led by the Holy Spirit to the various places he went such as the wilderness. Luke 4:1Amplified Bible (AMP) 4 Then Jesus, full of and controlled by the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led in [by] the [Holy] Spirit. Jesus Christ ministry was a ministry in which the Holy Spirit’s power was manifested, a ministry of word and deed oriented toward the marginal, a ministry that cannot be tied to single geographical or social location, a ministry that attracts even demands, response (The New Interpreter’s Study Bible Commentary). Luke 4:14-15 Amplified Bible (AMP)14 Then Jesus went back full of and under the power of the [Holy] Spirit into Galilee, and the fame of Him spread through the whole region round about.15 And He Himself conducted [[a]a course of] teaching in their synagogues, being [b]recognized and honored and praised by all. The Lord anoints Jesus Christ with the Holy Spirit to preach the good news to the world. Isaiah 61:1-3 Amplified Bible (AMP)61 The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me, because the Lord has anointed and qualified me to preach the Gospel of good tidings to the meek, the poor, and afflicted; He has sent me to bind up and heal the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the [physical and spiritual] captives and the opening of the prison and of the eyes to those who are bound,(A)2 To proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord [the year of His favor] [a]and the day of vengeance of our God, to comfort all who mourn,(B)3 To grant [consolation and joy] to those who mourn in Zion—to give them an ornament (a garland or diadem) of beauty instead of ashes, the oil of joy instead of mourning, the garment [expressive] of praise instead of a heavy, burdened, and failing spirit—that they may be called oaks of righteousness [lofty, strong, and magnificent, distinguished for uprightness, justice, and right standing with God], the planting of the Lord, that He may be glorified. We can also see that Jesus Christ gave instructions/commandments to the apostles whom He has chosen through the Holy Spirit. Acts 1:2 Amplified Bible (AMP)2Until the day when He ascended, after He through the Holy Spirit had instructed and commanded the apostles (special messengers) whom He had chosen. Jesus Christ suffered and died because of our sins, this was done in order to bring us to God. He was put to death in the flesh, but made alive in the Spirit. 1 Peter 3:18 Amplified Bible (AMP)18 For Christ [the Messiah Himself] died for sins once [a]for all, the Righteous for the unrighteous (the Just for the unjust, the Innocent for the guilty), that He might bring us to God. In His human body He was put to death, but He was made alive in the spirit. Jesus Christ through the Holy Spirit offended Himself on our behalf without blemish to God, to purify our conscience from dead works to worship the living God. The blood of goats and bulls (Lev 16:15-16) and the ashes of heifer (Num 19:9, 17-19) accomplish a limited external cleansing, whereas Christ’s blood purifies the conscience, or inner person through the agency of the Holy Spirit (Heb 9:14, Luke 4:18). In conclusion, we see the relationship between Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit in the commissioning of the disciples of Jesus Christ and Him giving them the great commission to go into the world and preach the good news and baptize them in the name of the Father, the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Matthew 28:18-20Amplified Bible (AMP)18 Jesus approached and, [a]breaking the silence, said to them, All authority (all power of rule) in heaven and on earth has been given to Me.19 Go then and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them [b]into the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,20 Teaching them to observe everything that I have commanded you, and behold, I am with you [c]all the days ([d]perpetually, uniformly, and on every occasion), to the [very] close and consummation of the age. [e]Amen (so let it be).
