The Labor Party founding convention opened in Cleveland, Ohio on this date in 1996. Unlike nearly every other industrialized country in the world, the U.S. working class has not succeeded in developing a class-based political party substantial enough to contend for political power. In the early 1990s, the Oil, Chemical and Atomic Workers Union (OCAW) assigned Tony Mazzocchi to work full time on building the Labor Party within the broader labor movement. Although the Labor Party suspended its active operations in 2007, it was the most successful effort to construct an independent working-class party since the LaFollette campaigns 75 years earlier.
