The Lumads are among the most marginalized sectors in the island. Living remotely in the mountains, social services, including education, is a benefit hard to come by for them. Aside from being neglected, indigenous peoples’ communities in Mindanao are experiencing continuing threats to the security of their ancestral land and to their way of life as they are always faced by aggression in the name of ‘economic development’ like mining, logging, industrial plantations, etc. Illiteracy had made the Lumads vulnerable to manipulation. Thus, literacy is one way to empower the Lumads of Mindanao – to enrich their capability of defending themselves against encroachment and exploitation.
