The Mt. Pleasant Twp. Police want to alert residents to a scam where the actors identify themselves as Washington County Assessment Personnel. One actor will get the home owner out of the house to show them the property lines and will more than likely have a measuring tape with them as well as a cell phone or other radio. As this person distracts the resident, a second actor will enter the house and remove valuables, usually cash and jewelry. They communicate through the radio or cell phone as the outside person indicates that he is talking to his “boss”. The description of the outside actor is a white male in his 30’s-40’s, well dressed with dark hair. He speaks well, but has a slight accent. They were operating an older white pick-up truck, unknown make or model (possibly early or mid 90’s). Thus far, there has only been one reported incident in the township. Residents should know that per the county reassessment office, there is currently NO door-to-door or walking assessments taking place in Mt. Pleasant Township. The county will notify the police and township offices when they are in this area and will also put it in the Observer Reporter and on WJPA. Also, the county is using Tyler Technologies to perform this work. Their vehicles will be marked and they will be wearing vests and have ID badges readily available to display upon request. These workers work alone and will NEVER ask a person to leave their home. They may ask some questions, but do not even need to speak to anyone to perform their jobs. If residents have workers at their homes and are not sure if they are legitimate, they can always call 911 and have it confirmed either by them or an officer. Residents are encouraged to report suspicious behavior or activity to the police. They should also be aware that historically, these types of scams target he elderly, so they should try and keep an eye on their elderly neighbors as well. Chief Louis J. McQuillan Mt. Pleasant Twp.
